The Ambient-Ledger is an ongoing series of audio dispatches from composing musician Christine Newton Bush who inscribes the sonic wilderness of contemporary culture into vast and sublime soundscapes.

Dispatch 001: The Lamentations Of Mermaids was inspired by manatees, ancient marine mammals --- once described as mermaids --- that have inhabited the coastal lagoons of present day Florida for forty-five million years. They rely on sheltered aquatic environs for food and warm water. These estuary ecosystems have been compromised.

Polluted storm water, human waste, and climate change, have combined to kill most of the sea grass that cleans the water, prevents erosion, and feeds these gentle creatures. Habitat restoration will require billions of dollars. In 2021, over eleven percent of the total population of manatees in Florida starved to death. At this rate, in just a few generations, only mythical mermaids may remain.

An unwanted inspiration: the epidemic of gun violence in the United States. In remembrance of the victims, each dispatch concludes with a unique coda featuring a weapon being "un-fired" by reverse processing the sound of its discharge.
