The Ambient-Ledger is an ongoing series of audio dispatches from composing musician Christine Newton Bush who inscribes the sonic wilderness of contemporary culture into vast and sublime soundscapes.

Dispatch 002: The Hyperobject Methuselah In Moonlight is an uncanny reverie inspired by the ancient bristlecone pines high in the White Mountains of California.

The Methuselah Tree is one of the oldest living organisms on Earth with origins dating to the third millennium BCE. This track (and companion videos) envisage the tree as a sentient n-dimensional being delivering a message. What is it telling us?

This piece was also informed by the writings of David George Haskell (The Songs of Trees/2017), Timothy Morton (Hyperobjects/2013), and Bruce Chatwin (Songlines/1987).

Musically this track is informed by Björk (whose song “Hyperballad” inspired Timothy Morton); by saxophonists Rosalind Hall and Håkon Kornstad; and, by Peter Gabriel whose music taps into the psycho-ambience of the collective unconscious.

An unwanted inspiration: the epidemic of gun violence in the United States. In remembrance of the victims, each dispatch concludes with a unique coda featuring a weapon being “un-fired” by reverse processing the sound of its discharge.
